10 Lesser-Known Facts of Gantry Cranes
Name Origin: Officially named gantry crane. Its frame resembles a giant gantry, hence the nickname "gantry crane". Essentially, it is the outdoor version of an overhead crane. Overhead cranes are mounted on factory building columns, while gantry cranes stand on ground rails with two supporting legs, requiring no workshop building.
One Rigid Leg + One Flexible Leg: Many large shipyard gantry cranes are not symmetrically rigid. One rigid leg is firmly connected to the main beam; the other flexible leg uses a hinged joint. This design absorbs thermal expansion and contraction of steel, preventing structural fracture. The flexible leg bears weight but not horizontal thrust, a clever mechanical design.
World’s Giant Shipbuilding Gantry Cranes Are Mostly Made in China: The Goliath gantry crane used to build the UK’s Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier is Chinese-manufactured. Chinese products dominate the global market for ultra-large shipbuilding gantry cranes. Few foreign suppliers can deliver 10,000-tonne-class gantry cranes.
Honghai Crane: World’s Largest Mobile Gantry Crane (22,000 tonnes lifting capacity) : Located in Qidong, Jiangsu, Honghai Crane can lift up to 22,000 tonnes, equal to 400 high-speed rail carriages. It stands 148 meters high (≈50 floors), fitted with 128 pairs of rollers. It lifts entire huge hull sections for on-land ship assembly before launching, revolutionizing traditional dry-dock shipbuilding. The Taishan gantry crane in Yantai is 133 meters tall with a 20,000-tonne lifting capacity. A single steel wire rope reaches 4,000 meters. Its lifting speed is extremely slow — only 0.2 meters per minute. Heavy loads cannot move fast; slight swaying creates massive risks.
Self-weight Often Exceeds Rated Lifting Capacity: For large gantry cranes, the weight of its steel structure frequently outweighs its maximum safe load. Several-thousand-tonne gantry cranes carry thousands of tonnes of steel by themselves. The foundation and rails must first support the crane’s own mass before handling cargo.
Strong Wind Is the Biggest Hazard, Not Overloading: Outdoor gantry cranes are extremely vulnerable to strong crosswinds. Wind generates enormous lateral force. If a giant gantry crane derails in wind, losses are catastrophic. All gantry cranes are equipped with rail clamps and anchoring devices. When strong wind warnings are issued, they must be locked onto rails and fixed with ground anchor bolts.
Huge Gap in Size: Gantry cranes are not only giant shipyard monsters. Small mobile gantry cranes exist for workshop engine lifting with a few tonnes capacity. Container stacking gantry cranes at ports and ten-thousand-tonne shipbuilding giants all belong to the gantry crane family.
Main Beam Is Not Solid Steel: Nearly all main beams adopt hollow box girders, like giant hollow rectangular boxes. With the same bending resistance, box girders save over 70% steel and reduce dead weight. The top and bottom steel plates resist tension and compression during bending, while middle webs resist shear force.
Multi-point Synchronous Lifting for Ultra-heavy Lifts: Mega cranes like Honghai and Taishan do not use a single hook. Dozens of lifting points rise and fall synchronously, controlled by computers to keep identical height. This prevents uneven stress that could tear the hull module.
Rails Cannot Be Laid Arbitrarily: The rails of giant gantry cranes sit on deep pile foundations. Flatness requirements are extremely strict. Tiny height differences cause uneven leg loads. Long-term settlement monitoring of the track foundation is mandatory.
